The Association works specifically with people of Vietnamese and Chinese descent, for whom there is no alternative provision in the borough. Many people from this community are unable to access mainstream education and employment services due to social, cultural and language barriers. We work with mainstream service providers, and several other voluntary sector partners to equip our users with the basic language skills, training and knowledge needed to integrate into society.

The continuous growth of membership and the increased take-up of services are a clear indication that there is an ongoing need for the services provided by the Association.

Many of our members are still unable to access mainstream education due to social, cultural and language barriers. The need for this proposal has been identified through outreach, discussions in classes and with those attending cultural events. Within the community, it is widely recognised that the needs and aspirations of the Vietnamese and Chinese communities are still not being adequately met by agencies. Consultation with a sample of 60 users highlights the need for education and social care services in order to improve employment opportunities, integration and community cohesion. 80% of Vietnamese and Chinese Adults living in the Hammersmith and Fulham West London possess basic language, IT and numberical skills excluding them from being able to seek employment which impacts on confidence, wellbeing therefore further islolating and excluding them from mainsteam services. It is recommended that community groups educate and empower their members and provide training on issues and solutions to overcome economic and social difficulties. This is also evidenced by significant disparities and inequalities for other migrant communities in terms of accessing welfare support, employment and health (Inside Outside, Delivering Race Equality, DOH 2003).
